There are certain circumstances in which you should cancel your Australian Business Number (ABN). If you have closed down or sold your business, or are no longer operating in Australia, you should cancel your ABN. You may also need to cancel your ABN if your business structure has changed.

Before you cancel your ABN, there are a few important things you will need to do. First, you’ll need to meet certain obligations for each Government agency your business deals with. These obligations may include lodging, reporting and payment requirements.

Before you cancel your ABN you may need to lodge activity statements, lodge pay as you go (PAYG) withholding reports or pay any outstanding tax debts.

It’s important to remember that cancelling your ABN will also cancel other relevant government registrations such as GST. Cancelling an ABN will take effect immediately and can be done online through the Australian Business Register.
