You are required to have a director number (“director ID“) if you’re a director of a company.

How do I apply for a director ID?

The easiest way to get a director ID is to apply online.

Before you apply, you must have a myID (previously myGovID) that has at least a standard identity strength. If you don’t have the myID app set up on your device, click here.

To achieve a “standard” identity strength with myID, you need to verify at least two of the following Australian identity documents:

  • Passport (current or no more than 3 years expired);
  • Driver’s licence (learner permit is also accepted);
  • Birth Certificate;
  • Visa (using your foreign passport);
  • ImmiCard; or
  • Citizenship certificate.

Step 1: Gather documents

In order to apply for your director ID, you will be required to provide:

  • Your tax file number (TFN);
  • Your residential address; and
  • Answers to 2 questions based on details from the following documents;
    • Bank account details;
    • Notice of Assessment;
    • Super account details;
    • Dividend statement;
    • Centrelink payment summary; and
    • PAYG payment summary.

Step 2 – Login to Australian Business Registry Services

  1. Enter your myID email address and the authentication code that appears in the app on your device;
  2. A link to the ATO screen will open on your browser;
  3. Used the gathered documents from step 1 to answer the questions and then press submit;
  4. The director ID page will open;
  5. Select ‘Apply for a director identification number’.

Step 3 – Confirm all the declarations and then submit the information

What if I cannot get a Digital ID, but live in Australia?

You can apply by Phone.

ARBS will ask you questions based on information they have about you to verify your identity. If you don’t have the required identity documents, you will be required to submit:

ARBS will then mail your director ID to the postal address listed on your application.

What if I’m an Australian resident living overseas?

You can apply online if you have the required Australian identity documents.

If you can’t apply online, you will need to submit:

ARBS will then mail your director ID to the postal address listed on your application and/or your myGov inbox if you applied online.

What if I don’t have sufficient Australian identity documents?

You can still apply for a director ID.

Directors who do not have sufficient Australian identity and live overseas will need to complete a paper application.

  1. Download and complete the paper application from the ARBS website;
  2. Print and sign the form
  3. Attach certified copies of your identify documents – one primary and one secondary document.
